Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are among the most vulnerable in society. Most are dependent
on care by others. And, they are more than three times as likely to live below the poverty level as their peers without
disabilities.
At Volunteers of America Texas, we tailor services for those with intellectual and developmental
disabilities—coordinating care and resources, providing affordable housing and offering engaging activities—to help
them lead a full and satisfying life.
After proudly serving in the Navy, Chris was derailed by a negative mindset and poor choices that eventually led to
his incarceration. When he was released from jail, he knew he wanted to find a more positive, productive path. That path
became clear when he came to Volunteers of America’s Financial Opportunity Center in Houston.

High school students from Volunteer of America Texas' Action Teams are making their television debut in a
national advertisement promoting youth volunteerism. Supported by Volunteers of America and the Major League
Players Trust, Action Teams bring together high school students interested in volunteering to make their
communities stronger through service projects.

Mothers with minor children are one of the fastest growing sectors of the incarcerated population. To
address this staggering trend, Volunteers of America Texas has developed programs to help these women and
their families defy the odds and create stable, healthy lifestyles.
