Have You Seen Us on TV? A letter from Melody Timinsky, President & CEO of Volunteers of America Texas
Over the last couple months, you may have noticed Volunteers of America
popping up on national television, everywhere from CBS Sunday Morning to CNN
and FOX News. If you did, you saw the faces of the people we serve – the most
vulnerable people in our society.
People dealing with addiction, housing insecurity, disabilities and
incarceration. They are among the most crushing problems humanity faces, and
someone must step forward to address the needs of those who others believe to
be unreachable. The health of our society depends on it. This is why we do what we do.
A troubling nationwide trend is the growing number of veterans who are
homeless and jobless. The Home Depot Foundation is helping Volunteers of
America address this problem in Houston at the Financial Opportunity Center,
where veterans and others in need gain access to important skills for securing
a job and managing their finances.
Sam, an adult with an autism
spectrum disorder, enjoys cooking and loves dogs. So, with support from the
staff at the Volunteers of America’s Life Enrichment Center in Plano, he has
combined his passions into a booming dog biscuit business.
Fort Bend Gardens, a VOA Texas affordable housing community for
seniors, had good reason to celebrate in January. Resident Annie Steinocher,
known to all as Miss Annie, turned 100 years young.
